Pick a class, a level and what you are killing — a monster, an area with its real spawn mix, or a Terror Zone — and read the experience per kill, the best areas for your level, and how long the next level and level 99 take at your pace, next to the ladder's own.
Full XP from five levels below yours up to yours (and five above while you are under level 25); further below, the game's tiers (81 %, 62 %, 43 %, 24 %, then 5 %); above you from level 25 on, your level ÷ its level.

Experience per hour while playing, over the last 7 days, of the ladder characters within 2 levels of yours that played at least 30 minutes — whatever they were killing.Open the ladder
A monster's level is its monstats.txt Level for the difficulty — except that on Nightmare and Hell a monster without the boss or NoRatio flag takes the level of the area it is met in (levels.txt MonLvlEx), so the same Bone Warrior is level 77 in the Tower Cellar and 85 in the Pit. Act and quest bosses keep their table level (Baal 99 on Hell); a super-unique is its type at its home area + 3; champions are +2, random uniques and their minions +3; a Terror Zone lifts the level first. Every tool resolves the level through the one rule, defaulting to the monster's first area in the game's order and offering the others where the level differs. A superunique's home area comes from a hand table (data/boss_behaviors.json, legacy), not from the map files.
The game's rule (D2Game monster init; D2MOO Monster.cpp). The areas a monster is met in are its nmon spawn lists, the preset areas and super-unique homes, and its leader's areas for a minion — asserted equal to /data/monsters when data/tools/xp.json is built (integrity audit 2026-10-08, root cause 2).
Base XP = the monster level's experience (monlvl.txt, expansion column for the difficulty) × the monster's own Exp percentage (monstats.txt) / 100, floored. An Oblivion Knight in Hell (level 85, 210 %) is worth 107,509.
A champion gives 3 times a normal kill's experience and a unique 5 times; champions are 2 levels above their type and uniques 3.
Each player in the game beyond the first adds half the monster's experience: × (players + 1) / 2.
A monster at or below your level pays in full within 5 levels, then 80.9 % six below, 62.1 % at seven, 43 % at eight, 23.8 % at nine and 5.1 % from ten on, at every character level. A monster above you pays 87.9 % / 68 % / 35.9 % / 14.8 % / 1.95 % by the same steps while you are under level 25, and your level ÷ its level from level 25 on — there is no band above you then.
Replaced the Arreat Summit paraphrase on 2026-10-08 (integrity audit XP-001): that rule gave a 5-level band in both directions and a level ratio beyond it, up to 36× too much for a low character in a high area.
From level 70 experience is scaled by the level's ExpRatio out of 1024: 976 at 70, 256 at 85, 35 at 92, 5 at 99.
Dying on Nightmare costs 5 % and on Hell 10 % of the experience of the current level, never below the level's start.
A terrorized monster is your level + 2, never below its own level, held to the difficulty's bounds — Normal 3 to 45, Nightmare 40 to 71, Hell 70 to 96; champions and uniques then add their own 2 and 3 levels.
The zone file gives terrorized monsters 25 % more experience in every difficulty; the lab adds it to the monster's base experience, before the kill type, players, level gap and ExpRatio.
The percentage is the file's; where the engine applies it in the experience chain is not yet checked in play.
An area's random monsters come from its spawn list — mon1–10 on Normal at each monster's own level, nmon1–10 on Nightmare and Hell at the area's level — weighted by each type's Rarity. One game picks NumMon of the listed types; the lab averages over games, so a single run can lean one way. Placed monsters (bosses, super-uniques, the Chaos Sanctuary's seals) are not in the lists.
Minutes to a level = the experience still needed in each level on the way ÷ (kills a minute × the experience one kill pays at that level). The experience per kill is recomputed at every level, because ExpRatio, the level gap and a Terror Zone's level move with you.
The median experience per hour while playing over the last 7 days of the ladder characters within 2 levels of yours that played at least 30 minutes, on the chosen ladder's current season — a reference, whatever they were killing.
Not modelled: party sharing between players, +XP % gear and shrines, and which of an area's listed types a game picks (the mix is the average over games).
